Join Kamloops Art Gallery Assistant Curator Craig Willms for a virtual conversation with artists Tia Halliday and Megan Dyck, to learn more about their collaborative art practice and The Laboratory of Spatial Bemusement.

A collaboration between artists Tia Halliday and Megan Dyck, The Laboratory of Spatial Bemusement creates a series of moveable kinetic sculptures and dance-based performances embracing a unique and uncanny union of kinesthetic and pictorial vocabularies. Emphasizing design and accoutrements reminiscent of 18th-century French furniture and textiles and modern interior design, the artists invite viewers to engage in a tactile and movement-based consideration of luxury and hybridized domestic objects.

They create liminal structures that function as eccentric arenas for experiential dance, immersing the participant/performer in a familiar yet foreign environment. The sculptures beckon vacant propositions and initiate a desire to be held, dwelled within, stood-upon, shaken, or worn on one’s head. Pictorial space is navigated in both two and three dimensions, and spatial and embodied images are created through the object’s entrances and exits, physical follies, and material oppressions.

The Laboratory of Spatial Bemusement, The Sense Economy is on view in The Cube until June 19, 2021.
