Pleasure Viewing: An Embodied Approach to Viewing Art

Sunday, November 2
10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Ages 16+
Pay-What-You-Can
 // $10 - $30

Pleasure Sourcing is an embodied movement practice developed by dancer and somatic awareness practitioner, Vanessa A. Woulfe.  The practice invites you to bring attention to pleasure through sensation and movement. Pleasure Viewing is an adaptation of this embodied movement practice, where we invite the body to fully come along as you engage with artwork. It does not require any previous movement training, simply a willingness to participate. In the spirit of Maura Doyle’s work, we will bring attention to “the inelegant and the easily overlooked”. We will get curious about our ability to access experiences of pleasure that reside in and around our bodies while taking in Maura Doyle’s exhibition Dear Universe

This offering will challenge you to engage with the artwork, yourself, and others in a new way. It will invite you to see the work through a new lens and notice connections between your external and internal experiences of the world. With  pleasure and comfort as a starting point, participants are invited to reflect, share, and re-enter the artwork again and again. How does our state – physical, emotional, creative, spiritual – shift the way we experience an artwork?

About the Artist

Vanessa A. Woulfe (BFA, BEd, MFA) spent most of her life in Tkaronto (Toronto), working as an independent contemporary dancer, while taking on facilitating, teaching, and leadership roles in her community. Returning to complete her MFA in 2013, Vanessa developed and began sharing her embodied movement practice, Pleasure Sourcing, as classes, workshops, and conferences. Moving to Tk'emlúps (Kamloops) in 2020 to be closer to her family, Vanessa began training in somatics and received her Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy certification, as well as Somatic Experiencing. Through her local business, Stellarfeels, Vanessa offers a variety of opportunities for individuals and businesses to expand their understanding of body-knowing, somatic therapy, and Nervous System Regulation. She brings with her a contagious energy, a sensibility for fostering deep personal connection, and a lifetime of embodied practices.
