A Herd of Dreams: Summer Camp 2025

Open Gallery
September 5 to September 21, 2025

The artworks included here were created over the course of eight weeks by 128 artists aged 5 to 12 enrolled in the Kamloops Art Gallery’s Summer Art Camp.

Inspired by the exhibition Keith Langergraber: Staircases Leading to Nowhere, throughout the summer young artists explored materials, concepts, and techniques used by the artist. They were especially fascinated with Langergraber’s interest in the herd of wild horses found near Ashcroft, his exploration of portals and other realms, as well as the energies that physical places hold.

In response to Langergraber’s work in Staircases Leading to Nowhere, which blurred lines between the known and unknown and invited contemplation of spaces between reality and other dimensions, the young artists created circular mixed-media portals. These portals, materially inspired by Langergraber’s multi-media practice, were conceived as gateways to other realms.

Crystals appeared throughout Langergraber’s exhibition, integrated into sculptures and drawings. Possibly serving as conduits for metaphysical energy or symbols of hidden mysteries, these crystals inspired the young artists to create their own and reflect on their nature – what they are, whether they can hold energy and whether they can carry meaning and power.

While creating these works, the young artists considered the possibilities of other worlds and the energies that may be present there. Have you ever felt a geographical place hold an intense feeling?

We hope that you will take your time exploring the artworks created here this summer and join us in celebrating the work of these incredible young artists.
