Programs

Our programs offer opportunities for people of all ages to learn how art connects us with our daily lives. Focusing on the KAG’s current exhibitions, programs include art camps, interactive tours, activities and workshops that encourage self-expression and experimentation while learning about art techniques, basic design concepts and a variety of media.

For the month of February, we explore experimental drawing practices and art-making using atypical devices. Can you draw while blindfolded? How about while using your non-dominant hand? Have you ever drawn with your pencil attached to a 4-foot pole? Or with six people trying to control the same marker? Experiment with all these techniques and more!
ARTBOUND was designed by Echo, Erin, Olive, Charlie, Layla, Phoenix, Olivia, Hannah, Sophia and Eric during THE LAB, our paid 2018 summer internship.

Join us as we explore the exhibitions, engage with interactive activities in the Gallery and create artwork inspired by the exhibitions in our studios. In February and March, we investigate the tableau vivant method (French for “living picture”) by recreating a painting using only our bodies. In April, May and June we explore our relationships to “things” and investigate how certain objects become special to us.

MONDAY // TABLEAU VIVANT
Explore the art work of artist Adad Hannah in our Central Gallery and learn about the theatrical practice of tableau vivant*. Throughout the day, we will experiment with recreating various tableaux from the exhibition and then work to create our own scene, complete with backdrop, costumes and props.
Featured art forms: painting // photography // theatre // sculpture
*French for “living picture,” tableau vivant was a popular form of entertainment in 18th century Europe. Costumed participants would arrange themselves in a scene to imitate a well-known painting, statue or episode from history or literature, and then hold the pose—silent and motionless – for 20 or 30 seconds while the audience tried to guess the scene.
TUESDAY // COLOUR THEORY + PAINTING
Calling all young painters! We will spend the entire day exploring paint – acrylic, tempera, watercolour and gouache – and learning how to manipulate this popular medium to create new colours and textures. During our exploration, we will look closely at the work of other artists for inspiration and spend time with the art work of local artist Marisa Drayton on our Open Gallery.
Featured art forms: painting
WEDNESDAY // EXPERIMENTAL + COLLABORATIVE DRAWING
Have you ever drawn with your pencil attached to a 4-foot pole? Or with three people trying to control the same marker? We will spend the day experimenting with these and other fun drawing techniques and learn about the collaborative drwing practice of artists Neil Farber and Michael Dumontier.
Featured art forms: drawing // painting
THURSDAY // BUILD YOUR OWN ART GALLERY + EXHIBITION
Today YOU are the Architect, the Curator, the Preparator, the Registrar, the Educator and the Artist! Learn about what goes into designing an art gallery and creating an exhibition from start to finish. Who are the people who work in an art gallery, and what do they do? This is your chance to find out and try your hand and each of their jobs as you build your very own miniature art gallery and fill it with art.
Featured art forms: collage // drawing // painting // sculpture
FRIDAY // CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
On the last day of camp, we hand the reigns over to you, young artists, and let you design the shape of the day. We will present you with ten different projects and you and your fellow campers will vote on which ones we do, and in what order.
Featured art forms: you choose!
Extended care is available for an additional $5 per day per child.
