Programs & Events

Our programs and events offer opportunities for people of all ages to learn how art connects us with our daily lives. Focusing on the KAG’s current exhibitions, programs include art camps, interactive tours, activities and workshops that encourage self-expression and experimentation while learning about art techniques, basic design concepts and a variety of media. Our events include exhibition opening receptions, fundraisers to inspired you and special happenings in the Gallery Store.

Mini Camps: Mud + Clay

In KAG Mini Camps, young artists aged 4 to 6 go on short, interactive tours to explore artwork in our exhibitions and learn through play in our studios. Adult caregivers are encouraged to drop their young artists off for this program, but are welcome to remain if they wish.

Join us on a tour of our exhibitions that encourages the youngest among us to share what they see, feel and think about the art work on view. On each mini-tour, we choose two art works to look at closely and explore with our eyes, minds and bodies. Participants of all ages are welcomed on these child-focused tours.

Tours with Toddlers is a part of our Multigenerational Programs that encourage creative cross-generational collaboration and honour the contributions that participants of all ages bring to our conversations. Children under the
age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Join us on Monday afternoons for engaging conversation in our galleries followed by guided art-making activities in our studios. Each week we select one to two artworks from our current exhibitions or our collection to explore in depth.

Guided by our art instructors, participants will be encouraged to become comfortable with sharing what they see, feel and think about art and to experiment with different ways of creating artwork.

Participants of all skill levels are welcome and no previous experience is necessary. The content of this program is designed for participants aged 14+ but you are welcome to bring your younger friends and children with you.

Back by popular demand, Harsh Crit invites you to bring your half-baked ideas, in-progress artwork and freshly finalized artist statements to get honest and critical feedback from your peers. If your work is too big to transport, digital images are okay too.

Let's come together to celebrate the opening of our fall exhibitions, Hexsa'am: To Be Here Always a further iteration of the original exhibition at the UBC Morris and Helen Belking Art Gallery earlier this year and Upon further discussion an exercise in multi-authorship realized by recent graduates from the visual arts program at Thompson Rivers University. Many of the artists will be in attendance. Live music, appetizers, wine and beer sponsored by Red Collar Brewing Co. will be available.

Join us as we explore the exhibitions, engage with interactive activities in the Gallery and create artwork inspired by the exhibitions in our studios. This spring, we explore our relationships to “things” and investigate how certain objects become special to us.

Young Interpreters is offered as one of our new School Programs for Homeschoolers and Alternative Learners. These programs are informed by the new BC Curriculum and encourage student-led, inquiry-based learning.

Parents, guardians and younger siblings are welcome to join in, too!

Does your child enjoy teaching? Encourage them to sign up as a Special Helper! Every month, we invite one of our Special Helpers to join our instructor to assist in leading the group.

Join us in our studios for a lively student-centered adventure in art-making. Each month, our instructor will guide the group through an exploration of a new theme and technique using storytelling, music and mark-making and then give your young artists time and support to work on their own. Shortly before the end of class, we will all gather to share our artwork and talk about what we learned.

All materials are provided.
No registration required.

Art Duel

Are you up to the challenge of creating a brilliant masterpiece in 60 seconds or less – while blindfolded and in costume? You could be our next Art Duel champion! Participants will be judged on their costumes, performances and their completed drawing. The winner will be awarded a solo exhibition on our Open Gallery, and has the honour of taking home a magnificent trophy to display on their mantle.

Not interested in participating? Join the Art Duel Hecklers! Mock contestants as they fumble through their performance, cheer for your friends and dance to the live DJ set. Free snacks and a cash bar will be open throughout the event.

Art Duel has space for 8 competitors. Register early to ensure your place in the competition. Visit the Gallery or call 250.377.2400.
