Holding a line in your hand
July 17 to September 18, 2021
This exhibition presents the work of five Canadian women painters of different cultural and demographic backgrounds. With work by Azadeh Elmizadeh, Colleen Heslin, Russna Kaur, Lyse Lemieux and Rajni Perera, projects include large-scale canvas paintings and site-specific wall paintings, small intimate works on fabric and paper as well as painted objects.
The title of the exhibition borrows a phrase from the way Lyse Lemieux has described her artistic process, which, for all the artists in the exhibition, implicates the body. Figures appear in much of the work, both through representation and abstraction, offering a bodily presence.
The focus on female painters offers a renewed perspective on a historically male domain. It speaks to the current resurgence of painting in Canada and the rich dialogue around historical precedents and contemporary approaches to painting.
