This summer’s program is inspired by the exhibitions, Lawren Harris: Canadian Visionary, which comes to us on tour from the Vancouver Art Gallery, and AlterNation, featuring work by a variety of artists that celebrates, challenges and explores how art has been involved in the myth-making and nation-building of Canada. Led by our talented art instructors, campers will interact with these historical and contemporary Canadian artworks and explore their own ideas of history and nationhood.

Each day includes an interactive tour and activity in our exhibition spaces, developing the ability of your young artists to articulate their ideas about what they’re looking at. One morning a week, campers will go on a field trip to the Kamloops Library (with whom we share a building) to participate in their Summer Reading Club and read stories that explore themes relevant to the exhibitions.

Back in our studios, campers will learn the essentials of art making—such as colour theory, symmetry, perspective and unity—and experiment with how to apply these principles to paintings, drawings and sculptures. As with all of our studio programs, KAG art camp prioritizes the creative process over the outcome. We encourage young artists to experiment, test new techniques and develop their skills through self-expression.

At the end of the summer, we celebrate the accomplishments of the talented young artists who participated in our summer art camp with an exhibition on our Open Gallery. We hold an opening reception for this exhibition on Saturday, August 26 at 1:00 pm.

Space is limited, register early to reserve your place.
