Women’s Art Initiative

A community of women supporting the work of women and equity-deserving artists.

Women and people who identify as Indigenous, Black, Brown, and as artists of colour have been under-represented throughout art history. An insufficient number of artworks by women and equity-deserving artists are held in the collections of public art galleries and museums; these artists have been given relatively few exhibitions; and related scholarship is scant. The Kamloops Art Gallery board and staff are committed to redressing this inequity.

The Women’s Art Initiative, launched in the fall of 2022, is an effort by the Gallery to bring together women who are invested in amplifying the work of women and under-represented artists through exhibitions, programs, collection-building acquisitions, publications, and research.

In 2023, this initiative supported the work of Zoe Kreye and programs offered in support of I know about lots of things I’ve never seen. And so do you.

Women’s Art Initiative participants commit to a philanthropic donation of $1,500, payable over three years ($500/year) which provides multi-year sustainable funding that allows the Gallery to create a program that features women and equity-deserving artists. Donors to date are recognized here.
